The Group
About Us
Our group investigates the fundamental properties and control of strongly interacting photons. We focus on stabilizing light into highly coherent, liquid-like states and leveraging synthetic dimensions to engineer optical frequency combs. Our work combines experimental implementations using semiconductor lasers and nonlinear media with theoretical frameworks based on lattice physics and fluid dynamics.
Research Focus
Liquid Light: We utilize fast-gain ring-cavity semiconductor lasers to suppress intensity fluctuations, forcing light into a coherent, incompressible state. We map these optical systems onto hydrodynamic equations to derive analytic models for engineering arbitrary optical waveforms.
Synthetic Frequency Lattices: We treat the evenly spaced frequency modes of a laser cavity as discrete lattice sites. By applying precise radio-frequency modulation, we couple these modes to control the flow of light through synthetic frequency space.
Spatiotemporal Control and Topology: We extend synthetic dimensions into real space using coupled resonator networks to study emergent lattice behavior. Additionally, we investigate time-varying media to explore photonic time crystals and non-adiabatic vacuum dynamics, including modified dispersion and correlated photon-pair generation.
